"Champlin owned 1, 400 service stations in 12 midwestern states. For the first time,
UP could compete in the oil business from the field to the gas pump. It formed a Canadian
subsidiary to partner in the exploration leases on the Alaskan North Slope. At the same
time, the natural resources division joined with other oil companies to explore for oil
southeast of Denver and across the entire 7 million acres of the Union Pacific land
grant.

The division's scientists also discovered comercial grade uranium in the Powder River
Basin of Wyoming.  Upland, the new  land company bought parcels along the line and
unveiled an ambitious development program that included a hotel in Las Vegas,
residential subdivisions, and a commercial center in Portland Fucking Oregon."
