Friday, September 24, 1999 @ Crystal Ballroom, Holy Modal Freaks

"An urban legend in the Portland area purports that on April 5, 1965, Little Richard fired guitarist Jimi Hendrix onstage during a concert at the ballroom, allegedly for lack of skill.

This alleged incident has been played up in marketing literature for the ballroom published by McMenamins.

It is known that Little Richard did play the Crystal on that date, and that Hendrix was in his touring band for much of 1965.

(AND no PHOTOS??? )

In addition, the two men did have a rocky relationship, with Hendrix leaving and rejoining the tour several times. However, there is no documented evidence that Hendrix played with Little Richard on that particular date, or that Little Richard fired any musicians onstage that day (Hendrix or otherwise). In addition, Hendrix would appear with Little Richard at shows in other cities later that same month, and he had a well-established reputation as a guitarist by that point in his career."

" It was at the Crystal Ballroom that Little Richard fired Jimi Hendrix for being more eye-candyish than he was"

"Q: You have lived through so much rock ‘n’ roll history, I’m just going to rattle off some names here and I’d like you to give me the first thing that pops into your head.

Dave Von Ronk/Bob Dylan

Peter: I met Dave in ’59. The ex-boyfriend of the girl I followed to New York whom I became roommates with was an old friend of Van Ronk’s. So we go way back"

" His wife was our manager. And he had this great self-deprecating sense of humor. He said once, “if you really want to stop the Vietnam War, get me and Stampfel to go over there and sing and everybody on both sides will run off screaming."

"Lou Reed

"The Rounders opened for the Velvet Underground at the Boston Tea Party in late ’69 or ’70, and that was the first time I ever actually heard him live. I had already heard all the records. We’d run into each other periodically now and then, and he was always friendly. But the last time I saw him was at a benefit for Tuli Kupferberg."

                     ***
"He was Lou Fucking Reed.

He was an arrogant dick who wrote a bunch of awesome songs.

Jeffrey Lewis said that the only people he has every record by is me and Lou Reed"

".I’m almost ashamed to have such a nasty story, but gratuitous rudeness to my daughter is something I can’t forgive."

Holy Modal Rounders Family, Gary Ewing Light Show, Freak Mountain Ramblers, Jim Boyer, Bingo

*Robin Remailly.....a real Rounder
*Marlilee Horde part of Golden Delicous
*Forest Bloodgood.....bloggod.  With the Freaks, and played some songs with the Rounders.  One of the best paying gigs for me. $200. And I took photos of us all in the Green Room, where the Urban Legend Walls of Timewhispered about Hendrix and Little Richard.
*Teddy Deane
*Paul Bisette (sic)

OH, and Steve Webber. The next to last show ever with Peter, I think.

Weber was notoriously Weber, but everyone was notoriously themselves. I won't go into details, other than him inviting a random woman up to sing Angel From Montgomery in front of the audience of hundreds.

The Rounders played Hornings Hideout the following day. I was invited up for the entire set with the Holy Holy Holy Modal Rounders. Maybe photos or a recording will emerge some day.

Bingo tried to pay me again, apparently being so flush with, cash he didn't realize his error. Or just stoned, which was highly unusual.
