She was wearing a Skinny Puppy T shirt one day, and I remarked on it; my housemate, a former LA retired "exotic dancer" told me that she'd dated one of the Skinny Puppy guys. Which stuck in my head, as she moved into our Mt Tabor rental home the same month a friend died in New Mexico who was a huge Skinny Puppy fan.

She told me the owner had given her the T shirt, and I definitely wondered about their relationship. I'd been on the verge of asking her out to do something. She liked me, and worked next door sometimes at Belmont Inn.

I went over to see her one early evening at the Belmont Inn, and was going to hang out at the bar on a stool and keep each other company. It didn't happen, as I had been playing some pool by myself and then  three very pretty ladies from Oakland asked to play.

One of the pool players dad was a former Black Panther, and told me she'd learned from him on their table at home. It was really fun, and I almost got invited to their next stop at a house party....and then one of the people said "oh wait what about so and so" like there'd be an issue, or another guy liked her.

In the meantime, I'd spent enough fun there. Waved to Megan, never saw her after that, other than maybe for another $2 pizza with arugula on top.

Which all means little to nothing in relation to the serious story reported, other than a vague feeling about the establishment, with its rather frightening and fire trap seeming music room, down in a basement. They had these "seminars" on sexual harassment down there, around 5 pm, and I thought that was cool.

Maybe that helped these employees come forward.

This alleged incident has been played up in marketing literature for the ballroom published by McMenamins.

 It is known that Little Richard did play the Crystal on that date, and that Hendrix was in his touring band for much of 1965.

The Rounders played Hornings Hideout the following day. I was invited up for the entire set with the Holy Holy Holy Modal Rounders. Maybe photos or a recording will emerge some day.

Bingo tried to pay me again, apparently being so flush with, cash he didn't realize his error. Or just stoned, which was highly unusual.

 One woman was cut open and a child taken out of her, and scalped. ... Squaw's snatches were cut out for trophies. You would think it impossible for white men to butcher and mutilate human beings as they did there"


The massacre sparked outrage and shock around the country. 

The Army began an investigation into the "battle", and Soule formally testified against Chivington in a court of inquiry in January 1865. 

His testimony about the events at Sand Creek led, in part, to Congress refusing the Army's request for thousands of men for a general war against the Plains Indians"

Mercury Does Not Endorse Sam Adams, Nor Doth Bacchus Nor Zeus King of All Lies

"The ad is for former Mayor Sam Adams’ campaign for the fourth seat on Portland City Council—a hotly contested race that includes Adams, incumbent Commissioner Chloe Eudaly, and a spate of other credible candidates.

If you zoom in very closely on that ad, you’ll see that while Willamette Week’s endorsement quote comes from this year, the quote from the Mercury comes from an article (not an endorsement) we ran eight whole years ago, in 2012.

Adams’ campaign isn’t technically claiming that we endorsed him in 2020 (this isn’t Mayor Ted Wheeler’s campaign mailer, after all). But by running that quote and our logo so close to another paper’s 2020 endorsement of him, it certainly looks like it.


Most people experience Facebook ads by skimming through them as they keep scrolling—not by zooming in on the fine print or Googling to find out the context of a quote—so it’s safe to say that some viewers of this ad likely assumed Adams had secured the Mercury's endorsement in the 2020 race. 

Former Commissioner Dan Saltzman pulled a similar trick back in 2014, and we called that one out as well.

And this ethically questionable ad choice isn't an isolated incident. Here are a couple other Adams Facebook ads, one of which fails to even include the detail that the Mercury's words are from 2012:

Sure, the Mercury endorsed Adams when he successfully ran for Portland City Council in 2004, and again in the 2008 mayoral race.

 But a lot has happened in Portland politics since then—and in Adams' own career. This year we chose to endorse keeping Eudaly on City Council over an Adams return."

"Wiener coached former legislative intern Beau Breedlove in early 2008, as allegations were first surfacing about his affair with Mayor Sam Adams.

At this point, Adams was lying to Wiener and others about having had sex with Breedlove, and says his relationship with Wiener suffered when the scandal broke."

According to Yahoo News, Obama told the web call the case made him feel a “sense of urgency” about November’s election, in which Trump is set to face Joe Biden, Obama’s vice-president.

Obama has followed precedent in not criticising his successor in the Oval Office in public but reports of his view of Trump are fairly regular.

 In January, for example, it was reported that he said Trump was a fascist."

Officials in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday walked back a requirement that people wear face masks inside reopened stores and restaurants, citing threats of violence and physical abuse directed at employees.

Mayor Will Joyce, an independent, amended his emergency declaration on the same day it took effect “in response to concerns voiced by business proprietors and citizens,” according to a news release. The anger directed toward store employees started in the first three hours businesses were open and included a threat of gun violence.

State and local governments have included a requirement that people wear masks in at least some circumstances as part of their reopening plans.

In Stillwater, many people objecting to the mask requirement cited their belief that the rule is unconstitutional, City Manager Norman McNickle said in the news release and first reported by the Stillwater News Press. McNickle noted that a federal court in Oklahoma City dismissed a lawsuit challenging the city of Guthrie’s mask requirement. The judge ruled the plaintiffs lacked standing to sue but did not rule on the constitutionality of the mask requirement, court records show.

McNickle said wearing a mask is a minor inconvenience that protects the person wearing it and anyone they encounter. “The City of Stillwater has attempted to keep people safe by the simple requirement to wear a face covering to protect others,” McNickle wrote. “It is unfortunate and distressing that those who refuse and threaten violence are so self-absorbed as to not follow what is a simple show of respect and kindness to others.”
