Books are open the coffee streams the bread rises her children sent off to wait for the bus her husband dresses for work casual she prepares for her students and literature classes later she smokes nibbles toast returns to the counter filled with books and pages of notes the birds outside the rabbit in the hutch the classical music radio the home is here everyone's gone and doing what they are required to do her time is hers she shares and shares stirs and puts on makeup and teacher clothes heard the bus stop below on the road to take her sons to elementary she made them lunches for later she fixes her hair she doesn't need to lock their home when she leaves it's safe and its spring and she'll see her father in town later and talk to her mother in texas long distance if the party line is clear it's near her birthday the challah rises the fogged up windshield clears traffic is easy she's well prepared to teach she has a cup in the car even tho it's a manual stick she does it all she'll get her sons after school and take off her shoes and bra and move books and pet the cat and gather asparagus and drink some wine after dinner and open her presents and look at a magazine or two
