Devout Assholes

"The GOP presidential nominee told the crowd that a friend of his had given Comperatore's family a $1 million check, and he also made reference to money donated to the family's GoFundMe.

"But you know what? Corey's wife said,

'I'd rather have my husband,'” Trump said.

Isn’t that good?

I know a lot of wives that would not say that — I’m sorry," he continued,

as the crowd laughed.

 "They would not say that."

"Trump's unfiltered manner of speaking has long been a quality reviled by his critics and beloved by his supporters.

His crude attempts at levity and flippant comments in somber situations — especially while he was in office — have contributed to a longstanding perception that he's

 callous and  not empathetic.

"her husband, who she said was a "devout Republican."

“I support Trump. That’s who I’m voting for, but Asshole, Asshole, Asshole"

"Comperatore, 50, was killed while trying to protect his wife and two young daughters when

 a 20-year-old gunman

opened fire at Trump's campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. "

(The 20 year old was Republican, too. )

"Two other men, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were critically wounded but have since been released from the hospital."

"de·vout

having or showing deep religious feeling or commitment.

totally committed to a cause or belief."

"cult

a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object."

"From 1994 to 2004, the Federal Assault Weapons Ban restricted the sale of the Colt AR-15

and some derivatives in the United States, although it did not affect rifles with fewer listed features.

After the phrase "modern sporting rifles", to be used synonymously with the AR-15 style,

was coined in 2009 by the US National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), a firearms trade association, it was quickly adopted by much of the industry.

Beginning in the 2010s, AR-15–style rifles became one of the

"most beloved and most vilified rifles"

in the United States, according to The New York Times; the rifles have gained infamy due in part to

their use in high-profile mass shootings"

'Acquitted killer Kyle Rittenhouse announced he would not be supporting Donald Trump’s attempt to return to the White House – but ultimately ended up endorsing him anyway after he was inundated with vitriolic messages from the former president’s supporters."

"Roaming Kenosha with other armed men claiming to be

self-appointed security guards,

Rittenhouse used a rifle to fatally shoot 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, then 26. He also injured Gage Grosskreutz, then 27, and was charged with five felonies, including first-degree intentional homicide."
