Time to thwart the wobbly forest

Not flaunt me. I'm normal, activist. See my angry cap.

Why not see.  Wobble wobble.

I wake to unusual sounds, cheers and honks, from a mostly empty school parking lot. the strike is blooming.

Ode, Ralph Waldo Emerson

Though loath to grieve

The evil time's sole patriot,

I cannot leave

My honied thought

For the priest's cant,

Or statesman's rant.

If I refuse

My study for their politique,

Which at the best is trick,

The angry Muse

Puts confusion in my brain.

But who is he that prates

Of the culture of mankind,

Of better arts and life?

Go, blindworm, go,

Behold the famous States

Harrying Mexico

With rifle and with knife!

Or who, with accent bolder,

Dare praise the freedom-loving mountaineer?

I found by thee, O rushing Contoocook!

And in thy valleys, Agiochook!

The jackals of the negro-holder.

The God who made New Hampshire

Taunted the lofty land

With little men; —

Small bat and wren

House in the oak: —

If earth-fire cleave

The upheaved land, and bury the folk,

The southern crocodile would grieve.

Virtue palters; Right is hence;

Freedom praised, but hid;

Funeral eloquence

Rattles the coffin-lid.

What boots thy zeal,

O glowing friend,

That would indignant rend

The northland from the south?

Wherefore? to what good end?

Boston Bay and Bunker Hill

Would serve things still; —

Things are of the snake.

The horseman serves the horse,

The neat-herd serves the neat,

The merchant serves the purse,

The eater serves his meat;

'T is the day of the chattel

Web to weave, and corn to grind;

Things are in the saddle,

And ride mankind.

There are two laws discrete,

Not reconciled,—

Law for man, and law for thing;

The last builds town and fleet,

But it runs wild,

And doth the man unking.

'T is fit the forest fall,

The steep be graded,

The mountain tunnelled,

The sand shaded,

The orchard planted,

The glebe tilled,

The prairie granted,

The steamer built.

Let man serve law for man;

Live for friendship, live for love,

For truth's and harmony's behoof;

The state may follow how it can,

As Olympus follows Jove.

     Yet do not I implore

The wrinkled shopman to my sounding woods,

Nor bid the unwilling senator

Ask votes of thrushes in the solitudes.

Every one to his chosen work; —

Foolish hands may mix and mar;

Wise and sure the issues are.

Round they roll till dark is light,

Sex to sex, and even to odd; —

The over-god

Who marries Right to Might,

Who peoples, unpeoples, —

He who exterminates

Races by stronger races,

Black by white faces, —

Knows to bring honey

Out of the lion;

Grafts gentlest scion

On pirate and Turk.

The Cossack eats Poland,

Like stolen fruit;

Her last noble is ruined,

Her last poet mute;

Straight into double band

The victors divide;

Half for freedom strike and stand; —

The astonished Muse finds thousands at her side.

England in 1819, Shelley

An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying King;

Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow

Through public scorn,—mud from a muddy spring;

Rulers who neither see nor feel nor know,

But leechlike to their fainting country cling

Till they drop, blind in blood, without a blow.

A people starved and stabbed in th' untilled field;

An army, whom liberticide and prey

Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield;

Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;

Religion Christless, Godless—a book sealed;

A senate, Time’s worst statute, unrepealed—

Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may

Burst, to illumine our tempestuous day.

Percy Bysche Shelly

The World Is Too Much With Us

The world is too much with us; late and soon,

Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;—

Little we see in Nature that is ours;

We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!

This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;

The winds that will be howling at all hours,

And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;

For this, for everything, we are out of tune;

It moves us not. Great God! I’d rather be

A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;

So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,

Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;

Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;

Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.

---- Wordsworth

Resolution and Independence , Wordsworth

There was a roaring in the wind all night;

The rain came heavily and fell in floods;

But now the sun is rising calm and bright;

The birds are singing in the distant woods;

Over his own sweet voice the Stock-dove broods;

The Jay makes answer as the Magpie chatters;

And all the air is filled with pleasant noise of waters.

All things that love the sun are out of doors;

The sky rejoices in the morning's birth;

The grass is bright with rain-drops;—on the moors

The hare is running races in her mirth;

And with her feet she from the plashy earth

Raises a mist, that, glittering in the sun,

Runs with her all the way, wherever she doth run.

I was a Traveller then upon the moor;

I saw the hare that raced about with joy;

I heard the woods and distant waters roar;

Or heard them not, as happy as a boy:

The pleasant season did my heart employ:

My old remembrances went from me wholly;

And all the ways of men, so vain and melancholy.

But, as it sometimes chanceth, from the might

Of joys in minds that can no further go,

As high as we have mounted in delight

In our dejection do we sink as low;

To me that morning did it happen so;

And fears and fancies thick upon me came;

Dim sadness—and blind thoughts, I knew not, nor could name.

I heard the sky-lark warbling in the sky;

And I bethought me of the playful hare:

Even such a happy Child of earth am I;

Even as these blissful creatures do I fare;

Far from the world I walk, and from all care;

But there may come another day to me—

Solitude, pain of heart, distress, and poverty.

My whole life I have lived in pleasant thought,

As if life's business were a summer mood;

As if all needful things would come unsought

To genial faith, still rich in genial good;

But how can He expect that others should

Build for him, sow for him, and at his call

Love him, who for himself will take no heed at all?

I thought of Chatterton, the marvellous Boy,

The sleepless Soul that perished in his pride;

Of Him who walked in glory and in joy

Following his plough, along the mountain-side:

By our own spirits are we deified:

We Poets in our youth begin in gladness;

But thereof come in the end despondency and madness.

Now, whether it were by peculiar grace,

A leading from above, a something given,

Yet it befell that, in this lonely place,

When I with these untoward thoughts had striven,

Beside a pool bare to the eye of heaven

I saw a Man before me unawares:

The oldest man he seemed that ever wore grey hairs.

As a huge stone is sometimes seen to lie

Couched on the bald top of an eminence;

Wonder to all who do the same espy,

By what means it could thither come, and whence;

So that it seems a thing endued with sense:

Like a sea-beast crawled forth, that on a shelf

Of rock or sand reposeth, there to sun itself;

Such seemed this Man, not all alive nor dead,

Nor all asleep—in his extreme old age:

His body was bent double, feet and head

Coming together in life's pilgrimage;

As if some dire constraint of pain, or rage

Of sickness felt by him in times long past,

A more than human weight upon his frame had cast.

Himself he propped, limbs, body, and pale face,

Upon a long grey staff of shaven wood:

And, still as I drew near with gentle pace,

Upon the margin of that moorish flood

Motionless as a cloud the old Man stood,

That heareth not the loud winds when they call,

And moveth all together, if it move at all.

At length, himself unsettling, he the pond

Stirred with his staff, and fixedly did look

Upon the muddy water, which he conned,

As if he had been reading in a book:

And now a stranger's privilege I took;

And, drawing to his side, to him did say,

"This morning gives us promise of a glorious day."

A gentle answer did the old Man make,

In courteous speech which forth he slowly drew:

And him with further words I thus bespake,

"What occupation do you there pursue?

This is a lonesome place for one like you."

Ere he replied, a flash of mild surprise

Broke from the sable orbs of his yet-vivid eyes.

His words came feebly, from a feeble chest,

But each in solemn order followed each,

With something of a lofty utterance drest—

Choice word and measured phrase, above the reach

Of ordinary men; a stately speech;

Such as grave Livers do in Scotland use,

Religious men, who give to God and man their dues.

He told, that to these waters he had come

To gather leeches, being old and poor:

Employment hazardous and wearisome!

And he had many hardships to endure:

From pond to pond he roamed, from moor to moor;

Housing, with God's good help, by choice or chance;

And in this way he gained an honest maintenance.

The old Man still stood talking by my side;

But now his voice to me was like a stream

Scarce heard; nor word from word could I divide;

And the whole body of the Man did seem

Like one whom I had met with in a dream;

Or like a man from some far region sent,

To give me human strength, by apt admonishment.

My former thoughts returned: the fear that kills;

And hope that is unwilling to be fed;

Cold, pain, and labour, and all fleshly ills;

And mighty Poets in their misery dead.

—Perplexed, and longing to be comforted,

My question eagerly did I renew,

"How is it that you live, and what is it you do?"

He with a smile did then his words repeat;

And said that, gathering leeches, far and wide

He travelled; stirring thus about his feet

The waters of the pools where they abide.

"Once I could meet with them on every side;

But they have dwindled long by slow decay;

Yet still I persevere, and find them where I may."

While he was talking thus, the lonely place,

The old Man's shape, and speech—all troubled me:

In my mind's eye I seemed to see him pace

About the weary moors continually,

Wandering about alone and silently.

While I these thoughts within myself pursued,

He, having made a pause, the same discourse renewed.

And soon with this he other matter blended,

Cheerfully uttered, with demeanour kind,

But stately in the main; and, when he ended,

I could have laughed myself to scorn to find

In that decrepit Man so firm a mind.

"God," said I, "be my help and stay secure;

I'll think of the Leech-gatherer on the lonely moor!"

"That intangible malignity which has been from the beginning;

 to whose dominion even the modern Christians ascribe one-half of the worlds;

which the ancient Ophites of the east reverenced in their statue devil;-

 Ahab did not fall down and worship it like them;

but deliriously transferring its idea to the abhorred white whale,

 he pitted himself, all mutilated, against it.

All that most maddens and torments;

 all that stirs up the lees of things;

all truth with malice in it;

 all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain;

all the subtle demonisms of life and thought;

all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby Dick.

 He piled upon the whale’s white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down;

and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart’s shell upon it.'

Bibliomancy

  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibliomancy

"According to the Oxford English Dictionary,[1] the word

bibliomancy

(etymologically from βιβλίον biblion- "book" and μαντεία -manteía "

divination by means of") "divination by books, or by verses of the Bible" was first recorded in 1753 (Chambers' Cyclopædia).

Sometimes this term is used synonymously with stichomancy (from στίχος stichos- "row, line, verse") "divination by lines of verse in books taken at hazard", which was first recorded c. 1693 (Urquhart's Rabelais).

Bibliomancy compares with rhapsodomancy

(from rhapsode "poem", "song", "ode")

"divination by reading a random passage from a poem".

Peri Bathous, Or the Art of Sinking in Poetry

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peri_Bathous,_Or_the_Art_of_Sinking_in_Poetry

"Pope introduced the use of the term "bathos" (Greek βάθος, depth, the antonym to ὕψος (hupsos), height) to mean a failed attempt at sublimity, a ridiculous failure to sustain it, or, more generally, an anticlimax.

Although Pope's manual of bad verse offers numerous methods for writing poorly, of all these ways to "sink", the method that is most remembered now is the act of combining very serious matters with very trivial ones"

Doodlebug OKC

The West Edmond Field was Oklahoma's most important oil discovery of the 1940s. It developed through the persistence of Ace Gutowsky, who claimed to know the location of potential oil fields by using so-called "doodlebug" techniques, a modification of the divining rod.

 He was convinced that oil was located to the west of the Edmond, Britton, and Oklahoma City fields, but reputable petroleum geologists dismissed his claims due to a lack of adequate geological and geophysical evidence.

Gutowsky found a backer for his project in D. D. Bourland of San Antonio, Texas.

They spudded in on the Number One Wagner on January 2, 1943, in the NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 32, T14N-R4W, Oklahoma County, a few miles west of Edmond.

The well came in on April 28, 1943.

_________

Almost immediately pipeline service was established, with the bulk of the production going to the Champlin Oil Refinery at Enid.

The West Edmond Field produced 7,752,000 barrels of oil in 1944 to temporarily bring the state's sagging oil production to 1.5 million barrels more than the previous year. The field contributed to yet another statewide increase of 15 million barrels in 1945.

http://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=WE013

_________

Gutowsky's father, Assaph "Ace" Gutowsky, was in the oil business.

 He became convinced that a major petroleum deposit lay under the area north of Oklahoma City and scouted the area extensively.

 In 1942 or 1943, Gutowsky's father discovered an oil field at West Edmond, Oklahoma, that was estimated at 117,000,000 barrels.

 Gutowsky's father discovered the oil field using a "doodlebug," a "homemade divining rod" and "struck it rich" as several major oil companies bought leases from him.

By 1944, Time magazine

 called the West Edmond field

 the "greatest concentration of rotary drilling rigs in the world."

"the 1980s and 1990s, the company experimented with application of different techniques of hydraulic fracturing of the Barnett Shale of Texas, eventually finding the right technique to economically extract the natural gas in the formation.

 The approach was widely adopted by the gas industry and spawned a new gas boom in North America.

 The Potential Gas Committee estimates that U.S. recoverable reserves will last 118 years at current production levels.

 production is expected to more than triple by 2020.

diamond stylus of fantastic night stereo (1987)

diamond stylus of fantastic night stereo (1987)

___

Dark crippled night draws the shades sealing long haze

Envelopes of rust and navy, feeds potted

Geraniums with postcard whispers of breeze bulk rate

Thirdclass it bounces around the world without

Direction ready by a million snoopy clerks

Cautious night unsheathes the porcupine quills

Brushed by rushing trucks and arabesque shoplights it

Dips into the inky murk of a million

Lonelinesses, sighing lovesick sailor, wraps our\

Leftovers with nocturnal foil

Goofy prankster night carves earth̢۪s shapes into

Shadowed heaps and fills our plates

With wine glasses, her apron is

Never peeled off and runs with the bug juice of a million

porch lights, squeezed hearts, spit out seeds in

Biodegradable coffins, starved pits, plastic dirt,

Formaldehyde prayer

Dusty tongued night yields a stick of charcoal

And sketches the latest ridiculous fashions

Frazzled hair tucked behind the ears,

Evening wear of spread-eagle clouds, hearty bibs

That wipe clean meal after meal,

Long deciduous robes without hint of starch,

Plaid stairs of mute moonlight statues and trellises one and

The same, rosewhisper patterns of wind

That hush the anxieties and fill in the cracks

With the sleep crust of a million eyes pulling living flowers

And doves from the tophat, drawing the diamond

Stylus of fantastic night stereo, painting

The blackness with forms loose,

Supernovas no less, sleepy atomic metronomes,

Tender moonlight wisps of collected scraps

That dogs of day wouldn't touch

Diamond stylus of fantastic night stereo

Sing A Poor

 Welcome🌲

Harassed while busking

Some white haired, bearded man about 60-65 in neato bike clothing went out of his way to harass me at Food Front today around noon.

I actually had a good day there finally, after 3 non profitable days. Then as I'm playing, off the sidewalk and on Co op property, this guy comes zooming by on the sidewalk and swerved toward my case which was open to collect tips. There were no other people around, no pedestrians, nothing to swerve away from.

I called after him, "going pretty fast." He was 30 feet away. "Fuck you" was his eloquent reply.

"Come back here" I said.

He pedaled on up Thurman past the Dragonfly.

See you later

Food Front WW Week Dopey Soapy BS

"Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,

'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,

And when we find ourselves in the place just right,

'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gain'd,

To bow and to bend we will not be asham'd,

To turn, turn will be our delight,

Till by turning, turning we come round right."

Empty Ballcap

Cody kicked his bucket

But I know nonothow, heard the idle chatter on the last bus home

A gas station guy on the counters other side

He was ringing up beers just yesterday

 *

Bussing from the pool over in cheery blossom

Feeling not too bad for Thursday

There at the mall got on the grim news, out of the mouth of Rene

*

He just die

Just like that

Another hard fact

Just like that

____

Probably the Covid I'd think, he was heavy, 40 in a wide orange vest

Smiling Colorado, a blond ole hick, said he knew

             Nostradamus from his history class

Lived at the corn, the unicorn inn, said his nayburr near                     burnt it up,

He smiled and moved his big ballcap, rubbed his belly

 tweren't a flu, twas MTN spew

*

He just die

Just a fact

No more alive

That's where he at

___

Sweating in the field there                         pump #9

Idaho family gotta make good time,

school starts up and dad's three jobs

Cody wipes his brow, sounds lots like mine

That's why I'm here on the worst damn road,

  filling tanks

 with petroleum

*

Back inside turn the slushy machine, 20 little cameras record the scene

A maskless montage of death on the go,

   poor Cody poor Colorado,  we all know

Life in a motel

 so far from home, friends to all but close to none

Standing and breathing just hours close passed,

 Cody lie still and none soon asked

____

Why we go

Just like that

Leaving no mark

Just an empty ball cap.

Plumb line

Leaning on yer shovel, staring at the phone

Holes don't dig themselves

You ain't al Capone

Your ex can wait to nag over what you'd soon forget

Drop the call

Drop the gadget

Drop it in the cement

 Ring out the bandana

Sweating overtime

Silence all incoming domestic jive

Pick up that hoe, mix the mud a little more

Eighty bag to go

It's not worth the weeping

Toss it in the box

Muriatic heartbreak got you soggy in your socks

Pull the forms, it's nearly set

We've finalized separation

Rebar lattice the details

It's the pour around the nation

Dump the squawkie talkie

You got yourself to blame

Your necks gone red to white

Blue balls feel the same

Fido is doing great

The kids getting straightish B's

Run a plumb line on your own time, honey please

Sleep Deprivation

'Scientists have proposed various biological explanations for the connection between soaring temperatures and mental health disorders.

At least some of these illnesses may have a simple origin: disrupted sleep.

Room temperature needs to dip below 68 degrees for a comfortable rest.

On warmer nights, people fall asleep later and wake up earlier, and the quality of their sleep is poorer."

beachglass money fused

 The kobold from the ship unappeased at the $24 burger and $18 margarita

The wind spirit ravenous from waters boiling, the gallery belching wealth gas, greed fumes, oil paintings and polymer monstrosity

People scramble to the sea

It sweeps, sweeps, sweeps us out to deaths safety

The jewelry fused with base metals from campfire popcorn tin, Lahaina goes away in a jiffy

The banyan inches on

Onward, a tourist parrot escaped in soot plumage wracked

The fancy cars all convertible now explode

Yachts kilter to sink popping sparks and champagne cases

The kite store releases it's kites as they box shiva's gift

The kami dance 40 feet tall

It fuses, it's a new thing done the old way, ocean hisses our DNA into the $13 brownie wrapped in chiffon

All town is crepe and blood from a sealess sharkless snark ridden coconut popsicle stand with our celebrity photos fire signed Was Here 4 stars

The bikinis melt unfabric

As waves turn it over, over and under the waves, the foundations and sand buckets and floaties emerge from  trillion gallon cat of $34 rocky road, pineapple zing

Howlies howl

Sand tumbles our tears smaller, more round than our delusions can imagine

"Although usually invisible, a kobold can materialize in the form of a non-human animal, a fire, a human, and a candle. The most common depictions of kobolds show them as humanlike figures the size of small children. Kobolds who live in human homes wear the clothing of peasants; those who live in mines are hunched and ugly and some can materialise into a brick; kobolds who live on ships smoke pipes and wear sailor clothing." .

"August 2023, Maui County filed a lawsuit against Hawaiian Electric, accusing the utility company of failing to turn off power on August 7 despite a red flag warning from the National Weather Service.

The lawsuit also claims that Hawaiian Electric knew high winds would topple power poles, knock down power lines, and ignite vegetation."

"One tradition claims that the kobold enters the household by announcing itself at night by strewing wood chips about the house and putting dirt or cow manure in the milk cans. If the master of the house leaves the wood chips and drinks the soiled milk, the kobold takes up residence."

"The sight of a Klabautermann is an ill omen, and in the 19th century, it was the most feared sight among sailors"

What's in it for me

Beside the infamy

You're just another perch in the sea

Not steady

Over ready

Bait n switch eloquent

Can't make a dent

Irrelevant

What's in for us

All blunder no blunderbuss

I hear that stuff

It ain't cuss tho cross my heart I like the guff

Meet ya half way almost there

Don't need to stare less you want a punching

Put it on my tab that saucy blab

Under my belt holding up the flab

It's on me but it ain't free

Your dime don't roll

In our square peg monotony

Quaker swing

 Hey can I borrow your porche

Gotta turn around

My bucket of bolts

Flannel not linen

Three point steering

I got the right o way

But I'm needing a porche

Yes assembled with gas

And a three day pass

Plus a soliloquy

That's not plagiarized

I need a porch

With a quaker swing like Mickey mantle dusting his

Porche for fingerprints

I need a porche.

 Go out of your way to be nice

It's a steeplechase

Watch out for the soffet

That's the wasps den

Gotta turn the other cheeky

Cheek cheek and eat that peanut butter lest the lippy lip flap

Don't take that sophist advice

Best be the vice

Bob Barker their nuts when you hurdle the moat spin the clickey wheel

Bend down and say hello

I'm taller but only cuz you're six feet under,

Go short on courage

Hide in their aprons that's ginger and spice

Napping under the sofa eating tofu what we should do soaks up all surrounding

Go out of your way

Take off the flip flops

Drop some LSD hug a tree

Nicely done give thanks we didn't hatch from silver banks

Moms did it, mostly or they tried or they didn't but that's all dad's fault

Going over the hell an extra mile leap the anthill you'll land just dandy

With an egg carton cap

And that quantum map for loafers won't stub you toe just

Be

Nice.

Detritus

There's an old frying pan, some clothes, assorted trash mixed into a nest of driftwood, but we can't find the diamond ring, nor much trust amid a sleeping beauty hedge with her limbs bonsai, slumped away from grandchildren toward some aesthetic weaned on motor oil jugs and dental floss unspooled. I like it she says, back toward the lone window with the blinds glued shut. Away goes her mom, away goes her boys, her book of laurels, her yellow pads streaming non sequiturds. Asterisks and arrows, highlighter battles, every other notion underlined, her right hand with a death grip on the TV remote that crushes juice out of the wee battery. Everything worth a look fits in a small backpack and all but a chapbook of photos is shit. She's elated I find some tiny scissors, put them in my purse which has an old bank card in it but nothing else. We used to drive around Portland, she'd point at sheds, barns, homes. I could live there, and I know where to find an old frying pan.
