the firstcat (1988)
The first cat to tip the garbage can found
An undiscovered treasure chest of thrownaway scraps
And jarred a sleeping nest of mice causing them to scurry
Fatally into his mouth and stupefied the owner of the slum hideaway
Who awoke from the floor to pour a saucer of milk invoking
Sympathy from the housewife who upon seeing
Him with battle worn ears and crusty matted fur took him in
To clean and in the end found himself
Presenting his lament MEOW to a coffeehouse of
Mousehaired pseudo-intellectual yuppies
Who with the first drag off poverty can only muster a
Googooeyed wow, who were really too uptight
To purr in public in the first place

fourth of july (1988)
Fireworks celebrate the fourth of july sky over the gulf of Persia
And you’re in italy sleeping off a siesta,
The planes passengers crossing the channel to their homes
Smelling of Lebanese meats and spices, the sound of silly
Children happy to see daddy, spouse’s complaint of the local
Vicious dog that terrorizes the innocent meter reader doing daily duties
I’m pitching horseshoes in Oklahoma, taking aim
And firing with my lower lip silently chewed in contemplation
Pitching my shoe and hoping for a ringer the macho
Burst of fireworks resounds in my mind
And all I felt was disgust, and all I felt was this remorseful code
Dashdashdash dotdotdot dashdashdashing thru all the
Miles and differing wartime zones, and all I felt
From this celebration of isolation was nausea
My mind churning with the bloated floating dead
O spangled banner of america who’d guess you’re not an island
Though surrounded by mental waters you only
Lower your drawbridge to send out armed salesmen, what
Carrion you produce along the skyways of commerce!
What blisters swelling on the triggerfingers of ignorance,
What vain nationalism with your civil plights
And comdom-nation of others! And what say I of myself?
I’m america too, an isolatoe, but I think that think my nation
Hates thinking, knockout those with something to give
Wrap nature in disposable diapers and talcum the
Consciences by proclaiming I am
Not me! Swear it doesn’t hurt though the drought burns
Our pink skins like sonic insults! Independence day
Fade away like a pipe bomb, like a tummy ache, like
A cramp in the side, and shatter our illusory caskets!

"Iran Air Flight 655 was a scheduled passenger flight from Tehran to Dubai via Bandar Abbas, that was shot down on 3 July 1988 by an SM-2MR surface-to-air missile fired from USS Vincennes, a guided missile cruiser of the United States Navy. The aircraft, an Airbus A300, was destroyed and all 290 people on board, including 66 children, were killed"
ain't no jobs (1988)
Ain’t no jobs in Stillsville none in the greasy armpit
Restaurants where the youth roll up their sleeves and plunge
Into the putrid dishwater and choke on the shit eating grin
While cleaning up for the zillionaire rednecks and
Their beehived concubines who snarl for ashtrays and deposit
Their chewing gum under yer apron
Ain’t no work in the convenience store unless ya lop off
Yer hair’s golden plumes and forsake the limbs of
Yer mind to the tree cutters and even if
You get the job it means livin on money stained with the
Feces of satan where bossman hides his piggybank full
Of coke and bribery ain’t no work with the paintbrush
Unless you got her papers certifying your ability to
Mask the seams cause even if you were to get a shot at
That job you’d probably fall off a ladder with
Paint in your eyes
Ain’t no labor opportunity in the construction sectors because
They’re being hatched prefab in mexico and korea
Out of shredded old growth complete with bedside bible
And ten gauge and even if you lucked into a shift
Here and there you’d see thru the shabbiness of the human condition
And make homes of mud
But there ain’t no positions to fill being a protector of the
Planet tho if I could get this appointment I’d
Take a few looks at our lawnmowers and suburban sprawl and
Family dissolution which would
Be more than an unending job

Silverado Savings and Loan
Silverado Savings and Loan collapsed in 1988, costing taxpayers $1.3 billion. Neil Bush, the son of then Vice President of the United States George H. W. Bush, was on the Board of Directors of Silverado at the time. Neil Bush was accused of giving himself a loan from Silverado, but he denied all wrongdoing.[29]
The U.S. Office of Thrift Supervision investigated Silverado's failure and determined that Neil Bush had engaged in numerous "breaches of his fiduciary duties involving multiple conflicts of interest". Although Bush was not indicted on criminal charges, a civil action was brought against him and the other Silverado directors by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation; it was eventually settled out of court, with Bush paying $50,000 as part of the settlement, The Washington Post reported.[30]
As a director of a failing thrift, Bush voted to approve $100 million in what were ultimately bad loans to two of his business partners. And in voting for the loans, he failed to inform fellow board members at Silverado Savings & Loan that the loan applicants were his business partners.[31]
Neil Bush paid a $50,000 fine, paid for him by Republican supporters,[32] and was banned from banking activities for his role in taking down Silverado, which cost taxpayers $1.3 billion. An RTC suit against Bush and other Silverado officers was settled in 1991 for $26.5 million.

"On November 17, 1989, the Senate Ethics Committee investigation began of the Keating Five, Alan Cranston (D–CA), Dennis DeConcini (D–AZ), John Glenn (D–OH), John McCain (R–AZ), and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (D–MI), who were accused of improperly intervening in 1987 on behalf of Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association.
Keating's Lincoln Savings failed in 1989, costing the federal government over $3 billion and leaving 23,000 customers with worthless bonds. In the early 1990s, Keating was convicted in both federal and state courts of many counts of fraud, racketeering and conspiracy. He served four and a half years in prison before those convictions were overturned in 1996. In 1999, he pleaded guilty to a more limited set of wire fraud and bankruptcy fraud counts, and sentenced to the time he had already served."

Sondland greeted in Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland businessman and U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland arrived at Portland International Airport late Tuesday night and was greeted by protesters.
“Hey, Gordon Sondland, tell the truth! Hey, Gordon Sondland, we’re watching you!” protesters chanted as they followed Sondland through the airport after he got off a plane.
Sondland has been a key witness in the U.S. House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.
Sondland initially testified last month that a quid pro quo did not occur during Trump’s phone call with the president of Ukraine. But on Tuesday his revised testimony was released that showed the opposite.
But as he walked through the terminal, a reporter asked Sondland why he had changed his testimony.
“I didn’t change my testimony,” he said.
He added that he couldn’t answer any questions.

Gordon Sondland, Portland tool
https://www.npr.org/2019/10/17/770714277/read-gordon-sondlands-opening-statement-to-congress
I am a lifelong Republican. Like all of my political Ambassadorial colleagues, I am an appointee of the President and serve at the pleasure of the President. I also know that part affiliations are set aside when representing the United States.
Having served on non-partisan commissions by the appointment of three Democratic governors and on the transition team for Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski, another Democrat, I am well accustomed to working across the aisle.
For example, I worked briefly with former Vice President Biden's office in connection with the Vice President's nationwide anti-cancer initiative and admire his long record of public service.
I had bipartisan support for my ambassadorial nomination. My successful business background and results-oriented focus made me, in my view, well suited to bring the fresh perspective to U.S. foreign policy that President Trump had sought.

Sondland, Influence Peddling Middleman
The phrase “quid pro quo” has become a kind of shorthand reference to the entire Ukraine debacle. But it is a phrase that Sondland uses himself to explain his negotiating philosophy.
In a 2016 interview with the Portland Business Journal, for example, he used it to describe how he facilitated phone calls between the former Democratic governor of Oregon and then-President George W. Bush.
“We would make these requests, and they were done quietly, they were done with rifle precision and there was always a quid pro quo,” Sondland said.
“The governor would help the president with something and the president would help the governor with something, and it was very transactional.”

Ron Wyden, Sondland, and Oregon Good Old Boys Club
Sondland or his business also made contributions to Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber, former Portland Mayors Sam Adams and Charlie Hales, as well as Portland City Commissioner Steve Novick. Some were made under Sondland's name, while others were submitted by Provenance Hotels.
And, in what would lead to his current position, Sondland donated one million dollars to Donald Trump's inauguration committee in 2016. Trump eventually appointed Sondland the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union.
Sondland's nomination was supported by both Republicans and Democrats. Most notably, Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden was an outspoken supporter of Sondland at his June 2018 confirmation hearing.
"I have known 'Gordy' for well over a quarter of a century," Wyden said during the hearing.
"At a time when lots of politics is polarized and divisive, Gordon Sondland will be a good fit."
Records show Sondland has donated nearly $15,000 to Wyden over the past 22 years. His wife has donated more than $20,000.

Bank records obtained by BuzzFeed News show Parnas received a $22,500 wire from Ballard in March and a second payment for the same amount in September. Ballard has previously said the September payment “has nothing to do whatsoever with Mr. Parnas's reported efforts related to Ukraine.”

"a three-year-old donation of $25,000 from Trump’s foundation to help re-elect Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, a Republican. "He sent Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi thousands from his foundation, just as she was considering an investigation into his sham university," says the digital ad, released Sept. 14. "She cashed the check, blocked the case, and he tried to cover up the donation."

dung dog spook smell
i had to heed the bumblebee, as they graced me
with no flower in sight, unless my dusty sweat
were sweet. i took my brushe
to the yard bucket of water,
removed the drowning astronaut and placed
them on the lawn. calling it a day,
the numbers swirling.
off the meet a bus, a hasty car pulls over
a bit ahead down the street. a wild eyed
wolf-dog darted across the street as
the man from the car ran after.
the dog ran to stop and sniff my hand,
he was a newly adopted stray,
as he led it back to his car by his red bandanna collar.
at my destination watering hole,
i watched as a shiny black SUV loitered in traffic
its plates obscured or missing. inside,
a loud bald man
several drinks boisterous held court at the bar,
a napkin-draped beer claiming a seat
for an absentee. the loud bald man
made rude unflattering comments,
reached into my space to point at some dumb ass
thing. i moved down a seat,
lo to more weirdness. like dung beetles
in the dark, looking to be rescued.

"Provenance Hotels announced Saturday that it has filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics against Oregon Democratic U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer.
Blumenauer called for a boycott of the Portland-based hotel company Wednesday, due to its connection to Ambassador Gordon Sondland; Sondland is currently embroiled in the Ukraine controversy with President Donald Trump. He’s also the founder of Provenance Hotels.
Blumenauer had called for the boycott when Sondland was originally blocked from testifying in the impeachment inquiry by the Trump administration. Sondland has since said he will testify.
Ellen Carmichael, spokeswoman for Provenance Hotels, said in postings on social media that Blumenauer’s call for a boycott is forbidden by the Office of Congressional Ethics."

NPR, euphemisms for Fascism in the Trump era
I'm sick of hearing the Corporate Spin on NPR
I grew up listening to NPR
every morning, ride in the car with the parents
every evening. NPR has changed
it's worse and worse under Fascist Trump
it got worse after NPR
started doing "ads" for their "sponsors"
it got worse after McDonald's founder
gave NPR $225 Million
"As of 2009, corporate sponsorship made up 26% of the NPR budget"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPR
n contrast with commercial broadcasting, NPR's radio broadcasts do not carry traditional commercials, but has advertising in the form of brief statements from major sponsors which may include corporate slogans, descriptions of products and services, contact information such as website addresses and telephone numbers.
These statements are called underwriting spots and, unlike commercials, are governed by specific FCC restrictions in addition to truth in advertising laws; they cannot advocate a product or "promote the goods and services" of for-profit entities.
____________
In a controversial act, NPR banned in 2009 the use of the word "torture" in the context of the Bush administration's use of enhanced interrogation techniques.
NPR's Ombudswoman Alicia Shepard's defense of the policy was that "calling waterboarding torture is tantamount to taking sides."But Berkeley Professor of Linguistics Geoffrey Nunberg pointed out that virtually all media around the world, other than what he called the "spineless U.S. media", call these techniques torture.
In an article which criticized NPR and other U.S. media for their use of euphemisms for torture, Glenn Greenwald discussed what he called the enabling "corruption of American journalism":
