" Hardy began studying the violin at the Opus 118 Music School in Harlem, New York at the age of 7, studying under the instruction of Roberta Guaspari, Lynelle Smith, Yonah Zur, and Elizabeth Handman.

During this time, Hardy had numerous performances around the New York City area at locations including Avery Fisher Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, FiddleFest at The Apollo Theater, and Carnegie Hall

where he shared the stage with Joshua Bell, Regina Carter, John Blake, Mark O'Connor, and Itzhak Perlman. "

"November 12, 2019, Nas was honored by Haute Living, along with Watches of Switzerland and Hennessy, in a celebratory affair that included

a violin rendition of iconic Nas songs performed by Edward W. Hardy."

"About.com ranked him 1st on their list of the "50 Greatest MCs of All Time" in 2014, and a year later, Nas was featured on the "10 Best Rappers of All Time" list by Billboard.

The Source ranked him No. 2 on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time.

In 2013, Nas was ranked fourth on MTV's "Hottest MCs in the Game" list.

His debut, Illmatic, is widely considered among the greatest hip-hop albums of all time."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nas

"Nas's flow as "effervescent", Rah Digga says Nas's lyrics have "intricacy",

Bootie Brown of The Pharcyde explains that Nas does not always have to make words rhyme as he is "charismatic",and Nas is also described as having a "densely packed"

flow, with compound rhymes that "run over from one beat into the next or even into another bar".

"Nas is perhaps contemporary rap's greatest innovator in storytelling.

His catalog includes songs narrated before birth ('Fetus') and after death ('Amongst Kings'), biographies ('UBR [Unauthorized Biography of Rakim]') and autobiographies ('Doo Rags'), allegorical tales ('Money Is My Bitch') and epistolary ones ('One Love'), he's rapped in the voice of a woman ('Sekou Story') and even of a gun ('I Gave You Power')."

Robert Christgau writes that "Nas has been transfiguring [gangsta rap] since Illmatic"

Google search penalty

edit

"In December 2013, Google penalized Rap Genius for violating their backlinks guidelines,—particularly involvement with blog networks—by removing them from its top search results.

Even with the search query "rap genius", results from rapgenius.com did not appear in the top results.

Instead, the top results showed Rap Genius' Twitter, Facebook, and Wikipedia pages, as well as

news related to the penalty.

This happened after blogger and Rap Genius contributor John Marbach exposed its link scheme to manipulate Google search results by offering Tweets or Facebook shares in exchange for linking to Rap Genius with keyword rich texts.

Rap Genius posted an apology, promising to stop and reverse the practice.

Rap Genius also pointed out that its competitors were participating in similar or worse practices, and a

sked Google to look at "the whole lyrics search landscape" and improve its lyric search results"

Marge Piercy

(born March 31, 1936) is an American progressive activist, feminist, and writer.

 "Her work includes Woman on the Edge of Time;

He, She and It, which won the 1993 Arthur C. Clarke Award;

and Gone to Soldiers,

a New York Times Best Seller and a sweeping historical novel set during World War II.

Piercy's work is rooted in her Jewish heritage, Marxist social and political activism, and feminist ideals."

"On her childhood and Jewish identity, Piercy said:

"Jews and blacks were always lumped together when I grew up. I didn’t grow up 'white.'

Jews weren't white. My first boyfriend was black.

I didn't find out I was white until we spent time in Baltimore and I went to a segregated high school.

I can't express how weird it was.

Then I just figured they didn't know I was Jewish."

"An indifferent student in her early childhood, Piercy developed a love of books when she came down with the German measles and rheumatic fever in her mid-childhood and could do little but read.

"It taught me that there's a different world there,

that there were all these horizons that were quite different from what I could see"

"The only thing

Rozos told the crowd that

“as I search my heart today in addressing you all”,

it is his “moral and political commitments [that] guide me”

into condemning Israel’s onslaught on Gaza,

which has killed at least 53,000 Palestinians over the last year and a half. "

Rozos went on to say:

“The genocide currently occurring

is supported politically and militarily by the United States,

is paid for by our tax dollars

and has been livestreamed to our phones for the past 18 months.

And that I do not wish to speak only to my own politics today, .

but to speak for all people of conscience,

and all people who feel the moral injury of this atrocity.”

"Rozos’s anti-war speech was met with widespread cheers and applause from students across the auditorium.

Some attendees booed Rozos, with one person appearing to yell “bullshit!” from the crowd."

"He lied about the speech he was going to deliver and violated the  bullshit commitment he made to comply with our bullshit rules. The university is withholding his bullshit diploma while we pursue  bullshit disciplinary  bullshit actions."

At least 80 people have been killed by Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling on targets across Gaza as faltering talks on a new ceasefire continued and Donald Trump said he wanted the US to “make” the devastated territory “into a freedom zone”.

"Trump’s statement recalled the plan he put forward in February for the US

 to take control of Gaza

to reconstruct it as a luxury leisure and business hub.

 The scheme implied the

 possible permanent displacement

of many or all of the territory’s 2.3 million people

Trump Compares Himself to a King While Defending Private Jet Gift

"Trump argued that Air Force One is “almost 40 years old” and nowhere near as cool as the planes

used by monarchs in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

“This is like a totally different plane. It’s much smaller, it’s much less impressive—as impressive as it is.

should have the most impressive plane,” Trump said.

"Justice Samuel Alito questioned New Jersey’s solicitor general on the broader implications of allowing nationwide injunctions,

painting district judges as “monarchs” in their courtrooms.

“There are 680 district court judges, and they are dedicated and they are scholarly... but sometimes they’re wrong,” Alito said, describing what he called an

 “occupational disease” among judges "

"Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson pushed back on the idea, touted especially by Kavanaugh, saying

 nationwide injunctions

are doing a “conceptually different thing” than class actions.

"Class actions give those covered within the class an enforceable right against the government, she said.

But such rights are not granted to people nationwide with nationwide injunctions,

she said. Instead, those people are just benefiting from an order

 that requires the government to

(£450bn) in the US over the next years.

However, Trump has already said that he'd like that to rise to

$1 trillion, including purchases of more US military equipment.

Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment fund (PIF), which controls assets worth $925bn, already has numerous investments in the US.

These include Uber,

Meanwhile, the UAE has already committed to investing $1.4tn in the US over the next 10 years, in sectors such as AI, semiconductors, energy and manufacturing "

Richard the Second as isis

flower sculpture as free range

"The Winningstad is a flexible, intimate, courtyard-style theater that plays host to a wide variety of performers. With 304 seats, the seating and stage can be set in a variety of ways to allow for truly unique experiences. Performances in the venue can extend off the stage and into the balconies, and seats can be removed to create additional staging areas. In a sense, the whole room is a stage, and the audiences become part of the drama."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_III_of_England

"raditionally, Shakespeare distinguishes social classes by having the upper classes speak in poetry while the lower classes speak in prose. In Richard II, there is no prose, but Richard uses flowery, metaphorical language in his speeches, whereas Bolingbroke, also of the noble class, uses a more plain and direct language. Shakespeare uses lengthy verses, metaphors, similes and soliloquies to delineate Richard's character as analytical rather than active. He always speaks in tropes, using analogies such as the sun as a symbol of his kingly status. Richard is obsessed with symbols: his crown, the symbol of his royal power, is of more concern to him than his actual kingly duties"

Stint Hurley

Two shows I played with Michael Hurley, Holocene and Cherry Sprout Market. Sprout was packed with admiring young audience sitting rapt on floor. Snock started playing the piano and did several. I flailed on fiddle, he never mentioned it. The one poor, in my opinion, segment of performance from me in our 30-40 shows, as he played piano. I saw a video of it and was aghast.

The Holocene show was our second time there, or first of two shows I got to join Snock/Reisch.  Sally Ford opened for Michael. Are you kidding? She's something else.

"Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside was an American rock band from Portland, Oregon.

The band has been described as "Rockabilly", or as having a "raw soul" 1950s rock-and-roll energy sound. Sallie Ford describes it as "Rock n Roll" and that people find it "more rockin’ than they expected."

The group received positive reviews from USA Today's music critic Whitney Matheson and from The Oregonian critic Ryan White.

In 2011, they signed a record deal with Partisan Records and released their first full-length CD Dirty Radio in May, began a US tour in June, and in August,

performed on the Late Show with David Letterman."

Some bands/performers Michael opened for, or shared the bill with, in my near two year stint with Snock

Pickathon---- so many other bands

Batwater----many others

The show with Terry Robb was a house party. Played alongside Alexa Wiley several times too, and Jake Ray. I organized the Maryhill Museum music one year and featured Jake solo on a set, Hurley/ Forest the next.

Alberta Street Pub, that followed a house party in Eugene, Alexa played both and I played with both her, Hurley.

Laurelthirst Pub 3 different shows.

The Mint Erin Glenn winery, the Dalles, twice

Papa G 's vegan deli, Portland, Snock  played 2-3 times (forest accompany)

Michael Hurley at Ekone, outside Goldendale, Wa

The Press Club, Hurley/Forest played 3-4 times. Sometimes with Reisch too

I don't have access to some photos or the recordings I made. Snock played at the Last Chance Barn Dance, I talked him into that one. He had a hoot, went on for three days. Two dozen bands? Don't remember exactly. Quick and Easy Boys were there, from a car crash in Hood River I think.

(Add more or redact as  time wanders on)

Oh, Snock opened for Jolie Holland at Ace Cleaners Hotel. Lewi/Forest accompany Snock

Hurley/Reisch/Forest opened for the Decemberists in Astoria, Liberty Hall

2-3 Hurley shows at Astoria Visual Arts center, several people opened those shows, including Wiley.

Blue Catfish studios, Astoria

Mississippi Studios, Snock/Forest opened for Vetiver.  Played together for Antonia celebration on another occasion.

"How should I play, Michael?" Before the first time ever playing together, AVA

" The Rise of the Submission Industrial Complex "

"the data we see at Chill Subs, our platform that tracks thousands of literary magazines and submission calls, paints a pretty clear picture:

submission fees aren’t the exception anymore, they’re the rule at the top.

Across all the literary magazines we track, about 13% charge fees.

Zoom in on Brecht De Poortere’s top 1000, and that number jumps to 24%.

Narrow it further to just the top 100 most popular magazines, and it spikes to 56%.

That’s not a slippery slope. It’s a cliff. The higher the prestige, the more likely it is that writers are paying just to be considered."

"By 2015, several of the top names in the industry, including Ploughshares and American Short Fiction, had begun charging fees.

And it snowballed from there. You can see the appeal. Multiply that $1.86 by thousands of submissions per month and it becomes one of the only consistent revenue streams a lit mag can rely on."

"Karan Kapoor, a writer from India, explains:

When I first started sending out work about six years ago, it was brutal. A $3 submission fee (slowly becoming $5) might seem like pocket change in the U.S.,

but thanks to conversion rates and a little thing called late-stage capitalism,

in India it can buy you a full meal, a rickshaw ride to and back from the restaurant,

and a lecture from your mom about saving money. If you’re submitting to 100 magazines a year—which, let’s be honest, is what it takes to get two or three acceptances if you’re lucky (and I do mean lucky, not talented)—that’s $300. "

He runs Sub Club, a top-selling Substack newsletter about opportunities in literary publishing, and co-created Forever Workshop, a monthly writing education series.

His work in the literary community has been featured in Electric Literature, Publishers Weekly, and Brevity and he’s written about the economics of indie publishing for Lit Mag News, The Writer’s Co-op, and more."

Tug of war, Tie.

wanting toy

"Trump has attempted to play down fears that the threat of supply shortages from his tariffs may lead to fewer toys for US children.

He argued last weekend that “a young lady” wanting a toy “doesn’t need 37 dolls” and may be “very happy with two or three or four or five”.
